According to a recent FBI report, about every 15.4 seconds in the United States a burglary is committed. Although a burglary is usually a non-confrontational type of property crime, still becoming a victim of such a crime can leave you feeling vulnerable and violated. At first, it may seem that occurrence of home burglaries is purely random, but in reality they involve a careful planning and selection process. Such homes which are not occupied and not difficult to enter are always targeted by burglars.
Home Alarm Tip #1
By installing a proper home security alarm system, you will be able to provide security for your home and your family 24/7. The main reason why home alarm systems are able to keep burglars away is simply because they increase their chances of getting caught and arrested by the police. The deterrent effect comes into play when you have a lawn sign from the alarm company and their decals displayed on your doors and windows. It has been noted that most burglars will keep away from the property with visible signs of an alarm system, and try to go looking for property without such a sign.
However, some people think that such signs are unsightly and refuse to display them. But, a burglar that is not aware of a home alarm system being present, might break in and enter the house through a door or a window and will be able to grab some quick items before the police responds. Also remember: do not write your alarm passcode on or near your alarm keypad!
Home Alarm Tip #2
Your home alarm system must be: 1) properly installed and 2) well maintained. It is advisable to get an alarm system that will be able to monitor for fire as well as burglary. Your home alarm system should include an audible bell or a horn in case if someone tries to break in. But keep in mind that if you have an audible alarm, it should be programmed to automatically reset after about 1 or 2 minutes.
The criminal will hear that message and will be long gone, but your neighbors might not be happy with the fact that they would have to listen to your alarm sound for hours before it switches off. And, of course, it is best to establish a neighborhood watch buddy system. This way, if some suspicious activity should ever take place, you will be covered.
Some Helpful Information
- If you are moving into a house with an old alarm system, contact the provider immediately and inquire about an upgrade.
- A thief may try to locate and then disassemble your home alarm system, so make sure that your system’s central panel is placed in a secure spot.
- If you are living in a dark or hidden area, you will benefit from using less expensive security options such as motion sensors, photocells and sound detectors. When triggered, they will turn on the lights and eliminate the area making them a perfect inexpensive deterrent against any possible intruders.
